In Spain I remember traveling through mile after mile of beautiful olive groves. At a little shop in Granada, I tried samples of different olive oils, and one type stood out. It had an amazingly fresh fruity taste with hints of apple, almonds, and pepper, something I had not tasted before. This same variety of oil turned up at several dinners throughout Spain, paired with bread and included in the cooked food. I fell in love with Spanish olive oil, and after two weeks of eating it I could see an improvement in my health, especially my skin. I brought some olive oil home from Spain, but then could not find anything in local stores that compared to it. That is why I was so happy to find Castillo de Canena Family Reserve Arbequina Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It is authentic and has that incredible unique taste one can only find in a Spanish olive oil made from the Arbequina olive. It is delicious on a variety of foods and, of course, goes well with bread. I also find it is beneficial to have a spoonful every day for skin, hair, digestion, and overall health. You can tell this family-run business puts care and detail into every bottle. This is without question my favorite olive oil.

I tried the olive oil but was disappointed because it’s not a bold one. It doesn’t taste peppery at all, but it’s a good product.

My wife and I visited Olive groves in Spain, We tasted several varieties. We prefer the taste of Picual olive oil for bread dipping. A little expensive but worth it. Great to serve with homemade bread.
Pour a little on a plate add salt, pepper, and a bit of garlic. WOW!

I’ve been buying good-quality olive oil for the only the last 8 months or so, including several bottles of this one. So I’m no expert, and my review should be read in that light.
But I wouldn’t have made repeat buys of this oil and given it as a gift if I wasn’t impressed. It has a greenish-yellow hue that supports its claim to be harvested early from green olives. The smell has a slightly sharp tang of fresh grass or tarragon, which is a pleasure to inhale. ( I always spend a zen moment smelling this oil before using it, something I’ve never done before with olive oil.) I don’t cook with this oil; I just use it fresh on salads or as a dressing or add it straight to hot food, such as pasta or rice, even potatoes. And I glug a shot of it each morning to help against my arthritis. (My bones and teeth feel much improved, but I’m taking other stuff for that as well, so I’m not going to claim medicinal power for this oil. Sure does no harm, though.)
The trouble with supermarket oils, even some of the more expensive ones, is that they’re made out of mixed batches from wholesale bulk tanks, meaning they’ve no traceable source to the land. Clearly that opens the door for the mixing in of lower-grade oils, old oils, and of oils not even from olives. The buyer is vulnerable to unwittingly consuming the very thing they buy olive oil t to avoid: unhealthy oil.
But with Castillo de Canena, the origin of the oil is clear. As the bottle declares, it is harvested and bottled on the estate, a use-by date marked. And we know the olives for this label were of a single variety, harvested and bottled early. In short, this olive oil has provenance. For me, after a lifetime buying dodgy olive oil, that’s a guarantee worth paying for.

I have been using this top of the line olive oil for a few years. It’s just had to beat. It’s produced from green Picual olives and has notable aromas of tomato and banana. Gold award winner in 2024 from NYIOOC. I can just eat it by the spoonful. They have some kind of new fangled top/spout that takes a bit of work, but that just teases me trying to get to the liquid gold inside the bottle.

As a fan of Arbequina olive oil, I’ve tried many brands, but Castillo de Canena stands out as one of the top contenders. This oil has quickly become one of my favorites, and it’s easily in my top 3 for Arbequina varieties.
The taste of Castillo de Canena is rich and fruity, with a subtle but distinct hint of guava that adds a unique depth of flavor. The aroma is equally impressive—fresh, vibrant, and inviting, it enhances whatever dish you’re preparing. I love drizzling it over a slice of warm bread or using it to elevate roasted potatoes. It’s the perfect finishing touch, adding just the right balance of richness and brightness without overwhelming the other flavors.
What really sets this olive oil apart is its smooth, well-rounded finish. The fruity notes linger pleasantly, and the oil’s delicate yet distinctive character makes it versatile enough to pair with a variety of dishes. It also works wonderfully in dressings, marinades, or simply as a dip.
Overall, Castillo de Canena Olive Oil is a standout in the world of Arbequina oils. Its exceptional flavor and aroma, especially the subtle guava undertones, make it a must-have in my kitchen. If you’re a fan of fruity, high-quality olive oils, this one is definitely worth trying.

This olive oil is delicious! I will purchase this product again, which will likely become my go-to Olive Oil. I love cooking with olive oil, dipping bread, dressing vegetables, and baking. Many olive oils leave an aftertaste that can be overly pungent, however this one is perfect.
I highly recommend it if you are looking for an oil with a delicate sweet almond and green apple flavor.
